Eddy County Makes Gains on Lea County as Top Overall Producer in New Mexico
Eddy County is gaining on Lea County as New Mexico’s largest overall energy producer. Eddy is already 17% ahead of Lea County in natural gas extraction, making it the state’s largest natural gas producer. Lea currently has a 32% lead in oil extraction, but production growth in Eddy County is predicted to close the gap in the coming years.Together, Eddy & Lea County elevate New Mexico to fifth in energy production countrywide; number three for oil only, and tenth for gas only. These two counties singlehandedly accounted for 96% of the state’s total oil production.Oil & gas has provided massive growth to both counties in recent years. The increase in energy production has provided a wealth of employment opportunities and boosted the local population. Carlsbad in Eddy County has experienced a 200% increase in residents (from 26,000 to 75,000) in just 8 years, most of which have gravitated to the Delaware Basin. While Eddy County may be second overall as we speak, the current upsurge in oil exploration in New Mexico has investment dollars pouring into the county like never before. Those in the know predict this will soon cause Eddy County to outshine Lea. Regardless of which county takes the lead, both counties are certain to prosper for years to come.
